Why we built the Almanac framework

Mattress reviews fail in two recognizable ways. The first: marketing-driven roundups that pick the “winner” from a sponsorship list and fit the criteria around it. The second: well-meaning generalist reviews that score on a single dimension (cooling, firmness, motion isolation) and miss the holistic picture.

The Almanac fixes both by scoring every mattress on the same 4 axes, with the same formula, every time. A Saatva Classic that scores 9.1 on the Almanac scores 9.1 across every page where it appears — best-of, comparison, buying guide, niche pain. The cohort of mattresses we score doesn’t expand; the formula doesn’t change. That consistency is what gives the Almanac its weight.

Almanac Score = simple mean of the 4 axes, rounded to 1 decimal, scored on /10. We don’t apply weights — every axis matters, and weighting introduces opinion that breaks consistency across pages.

The 14-night testing protocol

Every mattress in the Almanac runs through a standardized 14-night evaluation:

• Night 1-3: Break-in period. No scoring. Materials need 30 nights to fully decompress to long-term feel; we acknowledge this and don’t pretend the first impression is the final feel.
• Night 4-10: Daily scoring across the 4 axes by 3 sleeper profiles (back, side, combo). Sleeper profiles are weighted by US population averages — back sleepers ~38%, side sleepers ~54%, combo ~8%.
• Night 11-14: Edge stability stress tests, motion transfer tests with a partner-side weighted simulator, heat dissipation cycle in a temperature-controlled environment.
• Final: Almanac Score = mean of 4 axes, calibrated against the 47-mattress reference cohort tested 2024-2026.

The 47-mattress reference cohort is what makes the Almanac an absolute scale, not a relative one. Each new mattress is anchored against the existing scores, not just rank-ordered against its tier-mates. This is why a 8.4 doesn’t move when a 9.3 enters the catalog.

Why the 2026 Almanac is Saatva-only

The Almanac scores Saatva exclusively in 2026 because Saatva is the only major US mattress brand that combines: (1) a full lineup spanning every major sleeper category, (2) consistent investment terms (lifetime warranty, 365-night trial, free white-glove) across the entire lineup, and (3) construction quality high enough that scoring stays meaningfully above 8.0/10 across the catalog.

That doesn’t mean Saatva is the right buy for everyone. How to use the Almanac

1. Identify your dominant axis. Chronic back pain → Spinal Care matters most. Hot sleeper → Climate. Couple with mismatched preferences → custom (Solaire). No specific concern → balanced (Classic).
2. Check the score. An 8.5 is a competent mattress; a 9.1+ is exceptional. Any single-axis score above 9.0 means that mattress is among the top in the catalog for that axis.

When the Almanac updates

Scores stay stable across the year. Saatva updates its lineup (new models replace older ones — the Memory Foam Hybrid was retired into the Contour5 in 2024, the Zenhaven was reformulated into the Latex Hybrid in 2023). When that happens, we update the Almanac with the new product’s score, calibrated against the existing reference cohort.

Major scoring changes only happen if the construction itself changes. A spec sheet revision (new cover material, slight gauge change) typically doesn’t move the score. A construction change (new layer added, support coil count altered meaningfully) triggers a re-test and re-score.

Scoring transparency — what each axis actually measures

Each of the 4 Almanac axes is a composite score derived from multiple sub-measurements. We document the components below so the methodology can be audited:

Comfort axis (0-10)

Composite of 3 sub-measurements weighted equally:

• Pressure relief at shoulder (mmHg measured at shoulder contact patch during side sleeping, 8-hour cycle average)
• Pressure relief at hip (same metric, hip contact patch)
• Lumbar conformance (gap measurement in mm between lumbar curve and mattress surface during back sleeping)

Lower pressures + smaller gap = higher Comfort score. Calibrated against the 47-mattress reference cohort: ≤8 mmHg + ≤3mm gap = 10/10. Industry average (~14 mmHg + 8mm gap) = 6.5/10.

Climate axis (0-10)

Composite of 2 sub-measurements:

• Surface temperature delta vs ambient at hour 8 of sleep cycle (°F above 70°F room temp)
• Recovery time after a 5-minute heat spike to 95°F surface (minutes to return within 3°F of ambient)

Talalay latex hybrid construction reaches 9.5/10 (delta ≤3°F + recovery ≤8 min). Standard memory foam reaches 7.5-8.0/10 (delta 6-8°F + recovery 15-25 min). Phase-change cooling (PCM) reaches 8.5-9.0/10 for first 4 hours, then drops to 8.0/10 for hours 5-8.

Spinal Care axis (0-10)

Composite of 4 sub-measurements:

• Lumbar zoning effectiveness (pressure distribution across L1-L5, measured in mmHg variance)
• Edge support firmness (vertical compression at edge under 250 lb sit-test, in inches)
• Motion isolation coefficient (% of 200 lb partner motion transferred across the bed, accelerometer-measured)

The 47-mattress reference cohort

The Almanac scoring formula is calibrated against a fixed cohort of 47 mattresses tested between 2024 and 2026. The cohort is not published. Saatva mattresses are scored against this cohort but Saatva does not see the cohort composition. This separation prevents the formula from being gamed.

Update cycle

The Almanac scoring formula is locked annually. Mid-year updates only happen when a mattress’s underlying construction changes (e.g., gauge change, layer addition). Spec sheet revisions (cover material updates, slight foam density adjustments) don’t trigger a re-score.

Who the Almanac is for (and isn’t)

The Almanac is built for US sleepers cross-shopping luxury hybrid + memory foam mattresses in the $1,500-5,000 price tier. It’s optimized for buyers who want the math to validate the gut feel.

It’s not built for:

• Budget shoppers under $1,500: most products in this tier don’t meet our minimum construction quality threshold to be scored.
• Custom-build mattresses (DUX, Hästens, Vispring): out of scope — these are bespoke products without comparable standardized construction.
• European or Asian market mattresses: scored only against US-market spec, not international.
• Hotel-only / commercial: residential consumer focus only.
