It is positioned as the affordable option in the Koala range, carrying the essentials of the original Koala Mattress at a lower price. The current listed price sits at AUD 520, reduced from AUD 650, which is a saving of AUD 130. For shoppers working with a tight budget, a guest room, a first apartment or a child moving into a bigger bed, that price point is the main argument. This review sets out what the specifications, materials, trial terms and warranty actually say, and who the mattress is built for.

For the full shortlist this model competes in, see our best value mattresses.

Our pick

Saatva Classicthe step up for shoppers who want a longer trial and a lifetime warranty

365-night home trial

Free white-glove delivery and old-mattress removal

Lifetime warranty

Three comfort levels and two mattress heights

Check today’s Saatva price →

Who is the Koala SE for?

The Koala SE suits budget shoppers who want a straightforward foam mattress from a known Australian brand without paying for premium layers. It suits guest rooms, rental properties, children’s bedrooms and first homes, where the mattress needs to be comfortable and affordable more than it needs to last a decade of nightly primary use. It also suits people who like a lower profile bed, since the mattress stands at 23 cm tall and fits standard sheets without a deep-pocket cover.

It is a single firmness option with no comfort choice, so it works best for sleepers who do not have a strong preference between soft and firm. The 120 night trial gives a reasonable window to decide, and the 10 year warranty covers the long term. Shoppers who want a choice of firmness, a pillow top, or a coil support system should look at higher tiers instead.

What does the Koala SE actually contain?

The construction is simple and fully described on the product page. The top fabric is a blend of 65 percent polyester and 35 percent TENCEL Lyocell, a fibre derived from sustainable wood sources that is naturally soft to the touch. The comfort layer is polyurethane foam, and the base fabric is 100 percent polyester with PVC dots to keep the mattress from sliding on the bed frame. The foams are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they are made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, heavy metals and flame retardants, and they promote indoor air quality with low volatile organic compounds.

The mattress is designed in Sydney and manufactured in China. The Single size weighs 16.20 kg and arrives in a box measuring 100 by 39 by 39 cm with a boxed weight of 18.55 kg. There is no coil layer, no latex layer and no separate comfort zone, which is what keeps the price at the entry level.

How much does the Koala SE cost in each size?

The listed sale price of AUD 520, down from AUD 650, applies to the size shown on the product page at the time of writing. Koala offers five sizes, and each has the same 23 cm height. The dimensions below are the ones published on the product page, so you can check fit against your bed frame before ordering.

Size

Height

Width

Length

Single

23 cm

92 cm

188 cm

King Single

23 cm

107 cm

203 cm

Double

23 cm

138 cm

188 cm

Queen

23 cm

153 cm

203 cm

King

23 cm

183 cm

203 cm

Payment is spread across several options. Afterpay splits the purchase into four interest free payments of AUD 130, payable every two weeks, on orders under AUD 3,000. ZipPay offers a credit limit up to AUD 1,000 with a AUD 9.95 monthly account fee, or AUD 0 if nothing is owing, and a one off establishment fee of up to AUD 99 may apply. Zip Money offers limits from AUD 1,000 to AUD 5,000 with 3 to 24 months interest free, subject to the same account fee. PayPal Pay in 4 is available on eligible transactions under AUD 2,000, and application and use may affect a customer’s credit score.

Still deciding? The Koala SE is the value pick, while the Saatva Classic is the pick for shoppers who want a 365 night trial and a lifetime warranty.
See the Saatva Classic price in your size →

How does the Koala SE feel and support you?

The Koala SE is a foam mattress with a single comfort profile, described on the product page as standard comfort. There is no firmness rating published, so the honest read is that this is a straightforward all foam feel rather than a tuned firmness option. The 23 cm profile is on the lower side for a foam mattress, which means less overall material between you and the base, and a firmer, more direct sensation than a deep pillow top mattress would give.

Support comes from the polyurethane foam layers rather than a coil unit. For sleepers of average weight who want a simple, flat surface, that is enough. The mattress is not offered in multiple firmness levels, so couples with different preferences will need to compromise or look at a model with choice. The TENCEL Lyocell blend in the cover adds softness at the surface, and the anti-slip base keeps the mattress planted on the frame.

Does the Koala SE sleep cool?

Cooling performance is not described in the product specifications, so there is no published claim to evaluate. What is known is the material list: a polyester and TENCEL Lyocell cover, polyurethane foam comfort layers, and a polyester base fabric. TENCEL Lyocell fibres are naturally soft and are derived from sustainable wood sources, and the foams are CertiPUR-US certified for low volatile organic compounds. Shoppers who sleep very hot should weigh the all foam construction against a coil or latex option, and use the 120 night trial to judge it in their own room.

What do the trial, delivery and warranty cover?

The trial runs for 120 nights. If the mattress does not suit you within that window, Koala refunds the full purchase price. Delivery is free on mattresses, and same day delivery is available on furniture and mattress orders in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide for in stock products. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane metro customers can select premium delivery that includes assembly and rubbish removal at an additional cost.

The warranty is described as a world class warranty of up to 10 years. Payment options, delivery speed and the trial window are the terms that matter most when comparing this mattress against others in the same price bracket, and the Koala SE states all three clearly on the product page.

What do the public reviews say?

The Koala SE carries a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars from 941 reviews on the Koala product page. That is a large review count for a budget mattress, and it is the clearest public signal of how the product lands with buyers. The rating is displayed alongside the standard comfort label, so shoppers can read the score in context with the price and the 120 night trial.

Who should NOT buy the Koala SE?

Skip the Koala SE if you want a choice of firmness, a pillow top, or a coil support system, since none of those are offered here. Skip it if you need a mattress above 23 cm for a specific bed setup or a deeper sheet fit. Skip it if you want a trial longer than 120 nights or a warranty beyond 10 years, because those are the terms Koala publishes for this model. Skip it if you sleep very hot and want a construction built around airflow, since the Koala SE is an all foam design with no coil layer.

Also skip it if you are buying for a primary bed that needs to hold up to heavy nightly use for many years. The SE is the entry tier, and the price reflects that positioning. Shoppers in that position should compare the step up options before committing.

How does the Saatva Classic compare as the step up?

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with a dual coil design of triple tempered recycled carbon steel coils, a 3 inch Euro pillow top, and patented Lumbar Zone technology for spinal alignment. It comes in three comfort levels: Plush Soft at 3 out of 10, Luxury Firm at 5 to 7 out of 10, and Firm at 8 out of 10. It is available in two heights, 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. The cover is a breathable blend that includes organic cotton and is treated with Guardin botanical antimicrobial treatment.

The trial is 365 nights, the delivery is free white glove service with in room setup and old mattress removal at no additional cost, and the warranty is a lifetime warranty on the original purchase. The Saatva Classic is CertiPUR-US certified and GREENGUARD Gold certified, and it is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association. The price on the Saatva page at the time of writing is USD 1,904, reduced from USD 2,229.

Who should buy the Koala SE: budget shoppers, guest rooms, rental properties, first apartments and children’s bedrooms, where a 23 cm all foam mattress at AUD 520 with a 120 night trial and a 10 year warranty is the right fit. Who should buy the Saatva Classic: shoppers who want three firmness choices, a pillow top, a coil support system, a 365 night trial, free white glove delivery with old mattress removal, and a lifetime warranty. The rating is editorial and is based on five criteria: price at equal size, trial and returns, warranty, materials and construction, and public customer reviews. The Koala SE scores well on price at AUD 520 with a 130 dollar saving, on a 120 night trial with full refunds, on a 10 year warranty, on CertiPUR-US certified foams with a TENCEL Lyocell cover blend, and on a 4.8 out of 5 rating from 941 public reviews. It loses points for the single comfort option, the 23 cm profile and the absence of a coil layer, which limits it against higher tiers. The score reflects the product as positioned in the Koala range, not a physical test.

Readers weighing the same choice often move on to our Koala Snoozytime review.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I try the Koala SE before deciding?

Koala gives the Koala SE a 120 night trial. If the mattress does not suit you within that window, the company refunds the full purchase price. That is a shorter window than some premium brands offer, but it is enough time to judge the mattress through different seasons and sleep positions in your own home.

What sizes does the Koala SE come in?

The Koala SE comes in five sizes: Single at 92 by 188 cm, King Single at 107 by 203 cm, Double at 138 by 188 cm, Queen at 153 by 203 cm, and King at 183 by 203 cm. Every size is 23 cm tall. Check the width and length against your bed frame before ordering, since the Single and Double share the same 188 cm length while the larger sizes run to 203 cm.

Is the Koala SE foam certified for indoor air quality?

Yes. The foams used in the Koala SE are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they are made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, heavy metals and flame retardants, and they promote indoor air quality with low volatile organic compounds. The cover is 65 percent polyester and 35 percent TENCEL Lyocell, a fibre derived from sustainable wood sources.

Can I pay for the Koala SE in instalments?

Yes. Afterpay splits the purchase into four interest free payments of AUD 130, payable every two weeks, on orders under AUD 3,000. ZipPay offers a limit up to AUD 1,000 with a AUD 9.95 monthly account fee, or AUD 0 if nothing is owing. Zip Money offers limits from AUD 1,000 to AUD 5,000 with 3 to 24 months interest free. PayPal Pay in 4 is available on eligible transactions under AUD 2,000, and application and use may affect a customer’s credit score.

Does Koala deliver the Koala SE on the same day?

Same day delivery is available on furniture and mattress orders in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide for in stock products.
