I’ve rewired the ceiling light in three rentals now, and the pattern is always the same: I fall for something 24 inches wide, then discover the ceiling is 7 feet 10 inches and my head clears it by an inch.<\/p>\n

Wayfair makes that mistake easy, because the chandeliers photograph better than the flush mounts. The fixtures that actually work in a bedroom are boring in thumbnails and typically run about $50 to $160.<\/p>\n

Here’s how I’d shop it now.<\/p>\n

Start With Flush Mounts, Not a Chandelier<\/h2>\n

Most bedrooms don’t need a hanging statement piece. They need even, glare-free ambient light at a height that clears your head.<\/p>\n

The classic shortcut: add the room’s length and width in feet, and the sum is a rough fixture diameter in inches. A 12 by 14 foot bedroom points to roughly 26 inches.<\/p>\n

I’d ignore that number in a real bedroom. With a bed, a wardrobe, and a ceiling under 9 feet, a 16 to 20 inch semi-flush usually looks more balanced.<\/p>\n

For an 8 by 10 foot room, stay in the 12 to 16 inch range. Anything wider starts to loom.<\/p>\n

Pick a Linen Drum for Hotel-Soft Light<\/h2>\n

Two bedside lamps and a Lutron<\/strong> dimmer can cover half the load, which frees you to pick a smaller, prettier fixture. Prices on all of these shift with Wayfair sales, finish, and seller, so treat the numbers above as snapshots.<\/p>\n

Priority order, if you’re starting from a bare box: measure your ceiling height first, then set your maximum diameter, and only then browse finishes.<\/p>\n

Do that and a $72 globe will outperform a $300 fixture you had to duck under.<\/p>\n
