On Oregon\u2019s north coast, Cannon Beach<\/strong> has a sea monolith that makes an ordinary walk feel cinematic. Haystack Rock rises 236 feet offshore where the broad Pacific beach meets the town. And because it\u2019s visible from the sand, you don\u2019t need a hike or boat trip to see the main attraction.<\/p>\n

But the rock is only the beginning. Cannon Beach is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Portland<\/strong>, which makes it an easy weekend escape with galleries, cafes, independent shops, and restaurants focused on Pacific Northwest ingredients.<\/p>\n

Haystack Rock changes with the tide<\/h2>\n

And at low tide, you can walk near Haystack Rock and study the protected shoreline around its base. The best part is the scale: people become small figures on the sand while the monolith holds the horizon.<\/p>\n

But you can\u2019t climb the rock or disturb the wildlife around it. Check the tide before walking out, then give the formations room. You\u2019ll also see the Needles, two tall rocks rising straight from the water.<\/p>\n

A polished town with a real beach<\/h2>\n

And downtown Cannon Beach is compact enough to explore on foot after the beach. You\u2019ll find art galleries, small shops, cafes, and restaurants close together, so a rainy afternoon still has a plan.<\/p>\n

But the town is expensive and crowded during summer weekends. More than 1.5 million visitors each year<\/strong> pass through a community of roughly 1,500 residents. My opinion is simple: reserve lodging and dinner early if you\u2019re visiting between June and September.<\/p>\n

Ecola State Park adds the wild edge<\/h2>\n

And Ecola State Park<\/strong> gives Cannon Beach its deeper sense of place. Its wooded cliffs look toward the ocean and the town, while Indian Beach provides a quieter stretch for walking and watching the weather change.<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t expect dependable sunshine. The coast stays oceanic, and conditions can turn wet or windy even in summer. Bring a warm layer and a windbreaker, then start early or go late when the viewpoints feel calmer.<\/p>\n

The park is close enough for a half-day outing.<\/p>\n

Can you swim there?<\/h2>\n

You can walk the beach, but Cannon Beach isn\u2019t a warm-water swimming destination. The Pacific stays cold, so the better plan is to watch the surf, photograph Haystack Rock, and let the salt air do the work.<\/p>\n

And June through September usually brings the most comfortable combination of drier days and moderate summer temperatures. Pack a jacket anyway. The beach may look bright from downtown, then feel sharply cool once the wind reaches you.<\/p>\n

How long should you stay?<\/h2>\n

And one night<\/strong> covers Haystack Rock, the beach, downtown, and sunset without making the visit feel rushed. Two nights let you add Ecola State Park, Indian Beach, and Arcadia Beach south of town.<\/p>\n

But Cannon Beach works best when you leave space in the schedule. From Portland, the drive takes about 90 minutes. Use the town as a base, then follow the coast when the forecast clears.<\/p>\n

The practical trade-off is part of the appeal<\/h2>\n

And Cannon Beach is touristy, polished, and often busy in summer. It\u2019s also small enough that you can hear the surf from the edge of town and reach the sand within minutes.<\/p>\n

But that convenience comes with a trade-off. If you visit outside the busiest stretch, the experience softens: wet sand, gray water, and Haystack Rock standing alone beyond the tide.<\/p>\n
