Sozopol<\/strong> is the coastal Bulgarian town where Rome carried off a 43-foot Apollo. Once called Apollonia, it had a colossal statue of the god in the 5th century BC. After the Roman conquest in 72 BC, the sculpture went to Rome and was placed on the Capitol.<\/p>\n

The 43-foot Apollo is only the beginning<\/h2>\n

And that story gives Sozopol a sharper edge than a standard beach resort. You can swim in the morning, then walk streets shaped by Greek trade, Roman violence, and Bulgarian history.<\/p>\n

But the statue itself is gone. It was eventually lost during the early Christian period, so the pleasure here comes from following its outline through the old town, archaeological remains, and the sea-facing fortifications.<\/p>\n

Start with the ancient history of Sozopol<\/a> before wandering without a plan. The town is most persuasive when the past sits beside ordinary life, with fishing boats in the harbor and restaurant tables filling after sunset.<\/p>\n

September keeps the town in balance<\/h2>\n

And early September<\/strong> may be Sozopol\u2019s best window. Summer weather can still support swimming, yet the town feels less saturated than it does in July and August.<\/p>\n

That timing also brings the Apollonia art festival, held every September with theater, exhibitions, films, music, dance, and books. But festival energy changes the town, so you should expect fuller streets and more demand around events.<\/p>\n

How do you reach Sozopol without overcomplicating it?<\/h2>\n

You\u2019ll likely fly through Burgas Airport<\/strong>, the relevant air gateway for this part of Bulgaria. From there, Sozopol is about 21.7 miles<\/strong> south, and a bus usually takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on service and season.<\/p>\n

But the short distance doesn’t mean every transfer feels identical. Traffic and seasonal demand can stretch the journey, so check the current connection before you commit to a tight arrival plan.<\/p>\n

Choose your base before choosing your beach<\/h2>\n

And Old Town suits you if you want evening walks, sea views, and restaurants outside the door. The compromise is possible noise and difficult parking, especially when summer traffic thickens.<\/p>\n

Harmani and the newer town are easier for hotels, services, and direct beach access. But they lose some of the old peninsula\u2019s atmosphere, particularly after the harbor quiets down.<\/p>\n

For a beach-first stay, Kavatsi or Smokinya makes more sense, ideally with a car. For three to five nights<\/strong>, I\u2019d sleep near Old Town or Harmani and reserve at least one day for the southern beaches.<\/p>\n
