Magnetic Island<\/strong> sits five miles offshore from Townsville, yet its biggest surprise is biological. An estimated more than 800 koalas<\/strong> live here, at the northern edge of their range<\/strong>. But this isn’t a wildlife park.<\/p>\n

The eucalyptus hills belong to the animals, and you have to walk quietly to see them.<\/p>\n

And the island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people, whose traditional country includes this coast. From Townsville, a ferry reaches Nelly Bay in about 20 minutes, so the trip feels more like crossing a bay than leaving the mainland behind.<\/p>\n

Why the koalas change the whole visit<\/h2>\n

But koalas aren’t the only reason to come. The island combines protected hills, granite boulders, hoop pines, fringing reefs, and sandy bays in a compact area of about 20 square miles.<\/p>\n

And you can spot wildlife while walking between beaches, rather than booking a separate wildlife excursion. I think that’s Magnetic Island’s strongest appeal: nature is woven into ordinary travel here. The sound of cicadas follows you along the track, while the sea flashes between the trees.<\/p>\n

The estimate of more than 800 koalas comes from the island’s wildlife records, and sightings are especially associated with The Forts Walk. You shouldn’t approach or feed them. Let the animal stay high in the branches, where the leaves move before you see its face.<\/p>\n

A 20-minute ferry ride leads to four different moods<\/h2>\n

But Magnetic Island doesn’t feel like a single resort strip. Nelly Bay handles the ferry terminal, shops, accommodation, and much of the island’s practical business, while Arcadia has beaches and short walks.<\/p>\n

And you can base yourself at Horseshoe Bay for a beach-centered stay or choose Picnic Bay for a quieter, more residential feel. I\u2019d pick Horseshoe Bay for two or three nights, because its beach, restaurants, and access to nearby coves make the days easier.<\/p>\n

The ferry crossing ends at Nelly Bay, and vehicle ferries also make it possible to bring transport from Townsville. That flexibility matters because some coves are easier to reach by vehicle, while others require walking and suitable conditions.<\/p>\n

The Forts Walk adds history to the eucalyptus hills<\/h2>\n

And The Forts Walk is the island’s essential outing, combining wartime remains with broad views across Cleveland Bay. You can watch for koalas in the trees while following the route, but the trail has exposed sections and deserves an early start.<\/p>\n

But the walk isn’t only about the view. The fortifications and former observation post explain why the island mattered during World War II, when Townsville was an important military base.<\/p>\n

Queensland<\/a> feels especially wide from the high ground. I like this walk because the history stays visible without turning the outing into a museum visit. Granite warms under the sun, eucalyptus leaves rasp in the breeze, and the sea sits beyond the old concrete.<\/p>\n

Mount Cook gives the island its rugged shape<\/h2>\n

But the highest point is Mount Cook<\/strong>, rising to 1,631 feet<\/strong>. Its height helps explain the island’s steep interior, while the protected areas cover much of the hills and northwestern side.<\/p>\n

And you can balance the inland walks with water time at Horseshoe Bay, Alma Bay, Geoffrey Bay, Arthur Bay, or Florence Bay. I\u2019d leave room for that change of pace, because the island is better when you alternate warm trails with salt air.<\/p>\n

Snorkeling is available near several bays, and the Great Barrier Reef setting gives the water its own pull. Conditions matter, though. You shouldn’t treat every beach as interchangeable, especially when weather or seasonal marine risks affect swimming.<\/p>\n

May through September is the easier season<\/h2>\n

And May through September<\/strong> is generally the most comfortable period, during the dry season. You\u2019ll have better odds for walking and beach time, with less rain than during the hotter, more humid months.<\/p>\n

But November through April brings greater heat, humidity, tropical storms, and the local stinger season. Swimming enclosures are available at Picnic Bay and Horseshoe Bay, yet I\u2019d still check conditions before entering the water.<\/p>\n

Townsville<\/a> makes the island unusually simple to add to a Queensland itinerary. You can visit for one day, but two or three nights give the beaches, wildlife, history, and slower residential rhythm enough space to register.<\/p>\n

Can you visit Magnetic Island without rushing?<\/h3>\n

Yes, if you stay overnight. And you can spend the first afternoon settling in, walking near your base, and watching the light fade over the bays.<\/p>\n

But the best three-day shape is simple: ferry in, walk The Forts early, then reserve another day for snorkeling, a beach, or Picnic Bay’s jetty. I\u2019d keep the schedule loose. By late afternoon, the eucalyptus hills turn dark above the water, and the island finally quiets down.<\/p>\n
