Folly Beach sits 11 miles south of downtown Charleston, on a barrier island in Charleston County.

And it earned its surf reputation the hard way. Conditions here are usually calm, which should make it a bad surf town.

But it isn’t. Folly has become one of the more popular surf spots along the East Coast anyway.

The Washout is the name everyone here says first

Three breaks carry the town’s reputation. The Washout is the most popular, followed by 10th Street and the Folly Beach Pier.

You’ll hear those names before you find them. Ask anyone carrying a board, and the conversation starts there.

That is the honest trade-off of a calm-water surf town. The waves are not always working, so patience matters more than skill.

Is Folly Beach good for beginners?

Yes, and the usually calm conditions are exactly why. Water that rarely rages is water you can learn in.

Advanced surfers chasing consistent size will want managed expectations. Folly rewards people who show up often, not people who show up once.

A town of 2,078 people, and more than half the houses sit empty

The 2020 census counted 2,078 residents. Of the 2,391 housing units on the island, 55.8% were vacant.

That number tells you almost everything about the rhythm here. Much of Folly is rental and second-home stock, so the population you see swings hard with the calendar.

The people who stay skew older. The median age is 57.4 years, and 32.4% of residents are 65 or over.

So this is not a college beach town pretending to be quiet. It’s a genuinely quiet town that happens to draw surfers.

Center Street is the whole downtown, and that’s the appeal

Everything funnels onto Center Street, the main road and gateway into the community. Surf shops, restaurants, gift shops, offices, and bars line it.

You can walk the business district in the time it takes to finish a coffee. Eclectic is the word that follows Folly around, and for once it fits.

There is no resort strip here. What you get instead is a working beach community with a bar at the end of it.

More water than land, by a third

The city covers 18.9 square miles on paper. Only 12.5 of that is land.

The rest, 6.4 square miles, is water. A full 33.72% of Folly Beach is not ground you can stand on.

And the elevation explains the rest of the feeling. The island sits at about 16 feet above sea level, which is why the horizon reads so flat and so wide from almost anywhere on it.

Right whales pass offshore during migration

Endangered North Atlantic right whales migrate along this coast during the migration seasons. They are the state animal of both South Carolina and Georgia.

You won’t see them on a schedule, and no one should promise you otherwise. But knowing they move past that water changes how you look at it from the sand.

What is there to do besides surf?

The county runs three of the island’s anchors: Folly Beach County Park, the Folly Beach Fishing Pier, and the Folly River Boat Landing. The park stretches along the west end of the island, between the Atlantic and the Folly River.

That west-end stretch is a classic Lowcountry beach setup. Ocean on one side, river on the other, and not much competing for your attention in between.

Older than it looks, and stranger than it votes

Folly Beach dates to 1938. Two sites nearby, the Folly North Site and the Secessionville Historic District, are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town has its own politics too. In 2006, when South Carolina passed a same-sex marriage ban by 78% to 22% statewide, Folly Beach voted it down, 528 to 503.

That split says something no brochure will. A few hundred votes on a small island went the other way from the entire state.

Getting there, and what to expect

Charleston’s downtown is 11 miles north, which makes Folly an easy day trip and an easier place to stay. The island sits at the end of the road, not on the way to anywhere else.

And that geography does the sorting for you. People who come to Folly Beach meant to come to Folly Beach.

The sources here don’t pin down a best season, so pick your months by the surf reports rather than by a calendar someone sold you. The Washout will tell you when it’s ready.

Surnommée l’Edge of America, cette petite ville de Caroline du Sud attire les surfeurs de toute la côte Est.
