Sitka<\/strong> is the largest incorporated city in the United States by total area, a fact that sounds like a mapmaker\u2019s trick until you arrive by water. Its city-borough covers 4,811.4 square miles<\/strong>, much of it water, forest, and island terrain rather than city blocks.<\/p>\n

August is typically the warmest month, with an average high near 61.9\u00b0F<\/strong>. That is mild by summer standards, not beach weather, which is exactly why Sitka works best for people who would rather walk, watch, and get on a boat.<\/p>\n

Winter is very quiet, wet, and dark. You can still visit, but this is not the easygoing version of Sitka, and travelers hoping for standard outdoor activities should plan around the brighter months.<\/p>\n

Wildlife is part of the shoreline, not a side attraction<\/h2>\n

Boat outings can bring you near whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, and bald eagles. Bears also live in the area, depending on the sector and excursion, so wildlife is a reason to pay attention rather than a promise to collect sightings.<\/p>\n
