It\u2019s a spectacle, but the better reason to linger is quieter: the nearby refuge regularly records more than 320 bird species<\/strong> during migration.<\/p>\n

You come for the ponies because that\u2019s the story everyone knows. But you stay because this Virginia island trades boardwalk noise for marsh views, shorebirds, and an Atlantic beach that feels refreshingly spare.<\/p>\n

The summer swim is real, and it draws a crowd<\/h2>\n

Each summer, the Pony Swim moves the Chincoteague Ponies across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague. The animals live mainly on the Virginia side of Assateague Island within Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, and they are semi-wild animals, not props for a close-up.<\/p>\n
