My bedroom in the last rental measured 45 square meters total, and the gap beside the bed was exactly 100 by 120 cm. For two years I called that a reading nook while it functioned as a place where clean laundry went to think about its choices.<\/p>\n

The fix wasn’t more furniture. It was treating that corner as a destination with its own light, its own surface, and its own reason to sit down.<\/p>\n

Measure the Zone Before You Buy Anything<\/h2>\n

Pull out a tape measure and mark the floor with painter’s tape. A workable nook needs roughly 90 by 120 cm, about 3 by 4 feet, for a chair plus a surface plus light.<\/p>\n

If that strip doubles as your path to the closet, keep around 30 to 36 inches clear for walking. Anything tighter and you’ll shin-check the chair every night.<\/p>\n

My last apartment gave me exactly 100 by 120 cm beside the bed. That was enough, barely, and only because I measured first instead of hauling home a chair that didn’t fit.<\/p>\n

Tape it out for two days before you order. You’ll feel the squeeze long before a return window closes.<\/p>\n

Pick a Chair Under 32 Inches Wide<\/h2>\n

Compact armchairs typically run 71 to 81 cm wide and 76 to 86 cm deep. Beside a small bed, stay at the low end: roughly 70 to 82 cm across.<\/p>\n

The IKEA PO\u00c4NG<\/strong> is the honest workhorse here at 68 cm wide by 82 cm deep, with a 56 cm seat. It’s around $129 to $179 depending on the cushion, and the bentwood frame has enough bounce to actually relax into.<\/p>\n

Look for a seat height near 40 to 46 cm and a seat depth of 46 to 53 cm. Shallower than that and you’re perching, not reading.<\/p>\n

Armless slipper chairs work too, and they read lighter in a tight corner. Wayfair<\/strong> and Target<\/strong> both carry them under $200.<\/p>\n

Turn the Chair on a Diagonal<\/h2>\n

Here’s the move that separates a nook from a chair shoved against drywall. Angle the chair about 45 degrees into the room instead of pressing it flat to the wall.<\/p>\n

It eats slightly more apparent floor area. It also kills the waiting-room look instantly, and it visually breaks the chair away from the bed so the two zones stop competing.<\/p>\n

My favorite version sits at the foot-side corner, facing diagonally toward the window. That corner needs about 110 by 120 cm to breathe.<\/p>\n

Mount the Light on the Wall, Not the Floor<\/h2>\n

Floor lamps are the wrong answer beside a compact bed. The base steals the exact square footage your feet need, and the cord becomes a trip hazard at 2 a.m.<\/p>\n

Go up instead. The IKEA NYM\u00c5NE<\/strong> adjustable wall reading lamp puts out about 400 lumens for roughly $30 plus a GU10 bulb, and the arm swings where you want it.<\/p>\n

Mount the fixture near seated shoulder level and aim the beam at the page, not at your face. That single adjustment does more for reading comfort than any cushion.<\/p>\n

Home Depot<\/strong> and Lowe’s<\/strong> both stock plug-in swing-arm sconces if you can’t hardwire in a rental. Cord covers cost about $12.<\/p>\n

Keep the Side Table Small and Close<\/h2>\n

A round table only needs 35 to 45 cm in diameter to hold a mug, a paperback, and your phone. Bigger just gets cluttered.<\/p>\n

Park it within 30 to 45 cm of the chair arm so you’re not leaning. The tabletop should land within roughly 2 inches of armrest height, typically 55 to 65 cm off the floor.<\/p>\n

The IKEA GLADOM<\/strong> tray table hits 45 cm across at 53 cm high for about $25, and the removable tray means you can carry the whole setup to bed.<\/p>\n

Tight on floor space? A wall shelf 18 to 25 cm deep and 35 to 60 cm wide does the same job with zero footprint.<\/p>\n

Add Exactly One Textile Layer<\/h2>\n

One layer. That’s the rule that keeps a small nook from reading as laundry pile.<\/p>\n

Pick a wool throw<\/strong> over the chair back or a small rug under the legs, not both. In a zone this size, doubling up makes the corner feel busy and shrinks it visually.<\/p>\n

A chunky knit in oatmeal. One woven cushion in a color the bedding doesn’t already use.<\/p>\n

I keep a cotton waffle throw on mine, around $30 at Target<\/strong>, because it works in July and October alike.<\/p>\n

Order in this sequence: measure and tape the floor, then buy the chair, then mount the light, and only then shop for the table. Reverse that and you’ll own a lovely side table with nowhere to put it.<\/p>\n
