Chautauqua Institution<\/strong> began on Chautauqua Lake in 1874 as a summer school for Methodist Sunday-school teachers. Then its idea traveled: education, music, lectures, faith, and recreation gathered in one temporary community, and \u201cChautauqua\u201d became the name Americans used for that model nationwide.<\/p>\n

The original place still makes the case better than any definition. You arrive in far western New York, near the Pennsylvania line, and find a lakeside town where a summer day can move from a talk to a concert without asking you to get back in the car.<\/p>\n

Why one lakeside summer school became a national word<\/h2>\n
