Skip the crowds on the Annapolis waterfront. A little over an hour east, across the Chesapeake, there’s a river town. Chestertown<\/strong> was founded in 1706<\/strong>, and it still looks the part.<\/p>\n

It sits on the Chester River in Kent County, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Roughly 5,532<\/strong> people lived here at the 2020 Census. That’s the whole town, not a neighborhood.<\/p>\n

An hour and change from three big cities, and nobody goes<\/h2>\n

Chestertown is about 1 to 1.5 hours by car from Baltimore, Washington, DC, Wilmington, or Philadelphia. Traffic and route decide which end of that range you get. And that’s the strange part: four metro areas within easy reach, and the sidewalks stay quiet.<\/p>\n

The town is the seat of Kent County, which means it never emptied out into a museum piece. People work here. But the pace on a Tuesday morning is closer to a village than a county capital.<\/p>\n

Brick sidewalks, Georgian houses, and a river at the end of the street<\/h2>\n

The historic district is unusually well preserved. You’ll walk on brick sidewalks past Georgian and colonial homes, with galleries, shops, inns, and restaurants folded into the same blocks. Nothing about it feels staged.<\/p>\n

Walk High Street<\/strong> down toward the water and you understand the town’s whole logic. The street runs to the river, because the river is why the street exists.<\/p>\n

It’s compact, and that’s the appeal. You can see the core of it on foot in an afternoon, then spend the evening deciding which of the restaurants gets your money.<\/p>\n

A college older than most of the country<\/h2>\n

Washington College<\/strong> was founded in 1782<\/strong>, which puts it among the oldest liberal-arts institutions in the United States. That matters for the visitor, not just the history buff. A college this old anchors a town of this size with bookstores, caf\u00e9s, and a reason for independent shops to survive.<\/p>\n

You’ll find antiques, art galleries, and independent booksellers within a short walk of each other. Small-town Maryland, but with a reading habit.<\/p>\n

The tea party nobody talks about<\/h2>\n

Boston gets the credit. Chestertown holds its own version every year at the Chestertown Tea Party Festival<\/strong>, around Memorial Day at the end of May, commemorating a local Revolutionary-era protest against the British.<\/p>\n

It’s the busiest weekend of the year here, so plan lodging early or skip it entirely. Come in June instead and the same streets are almost yours.<\/p>\n

When should you actually visit?<\/h3>\n

Late May if you want the festival, and any Saturday if you want the town at its most everyday. The Chestertown Farmers and Artisans Market<\/strong> runs Saturdays, and it’s the reliable weekly draw. That’s when the town turns out for itself rather than for you.<\/p>\n

The water is the point<\/h2>\n

The waterfront, boating, and sailing sit at the center of the town’s identity, along with Chesapeake seafood. The educational schooner Sultana<\/em> is part of that identity too, tied to the river the town grew up on.<\/p>\n

Order the seafood. You’re on the Chesapeake, and this is one of the few places where that’s a geographic fact rather than a menu claim.<\/p>\n

Do you need a car?<\/h3>\n

Yes, realistically. There’s no shortcut across the bay on foot, and the surrounding countryside is half the reason to come. Cycling or driving through rural Kent County<\/strong> and the Chesapeake estuary is its own slow pleasure.<\/p>\n

The land out here is flat and low. The town sits at about 20 feet<\/strong> above sea level, spread across roughly 2.9 square miles, so the horizon is mostly sky and water.<\/p>\n

What Chestertown asks of you<\/h2>\n

This is not a place with a checklist. It’s architecture, river views, food, and a weekend that moves slower than the one you planned.<\/p>\n

And if you need constant activity, you’ll be bored by Sunday. But if a walk down a brick sidewalk toward a river counts as an event, you’ll want two nights instead of one.<\/p>\n

Come back to High Street after dinner, when the shops have closed and the light is off the water. The river is right there at the end of the block, the way it has been since 1706.<\/p>\n
