The town got its charter in **1712**. Chatham sits at the southeastern bend of Cape Cod, with the Atlantic on one side and Nantucket Sound on the other. And that geography is the whole story.<\/p>\n
Only 6,594<\/strong> people live here year-round, per the 2020 Census. In July and August, that number climbs to somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000<\/strong>. The town swells, then empties, and the people who hold the harbor stay put.<\/p>\n Two bodies of water, two personalities. The Atlantic side gives you surf and open horizon.<\/p>\n You feel the difference in a single afternoon. Walk from one shore to the other and the wind changes on you. It’s a small town with two weathers.<\/p>\n Plenty of coastal towns sold off their working waterfront. Chatham Fish Pier<\/strong> didn’t. Commercial boats still come in, and seals still hang around waiting for what falls over the side.<\/p>\n Go stand there and watch the unloading. It smells like diesel and cold saltwater, and nobody is performing for you. That honesty is rarer on the Cape than the postcards suggest.<\/p>\n Settlement came in 1664<\/strong>, incorporation forty-eight years later. What survived is a New England center that reads as genuinely old rather than reconstructed. Main Street<\/strong> holds independent shops, galleries, and restaurants inside traditional Cape architecture.<\/p>\n But be clear-eyed about it. This is an affluent, polished town now, not a rough fishing village. The heritage is real, and so are the price tags.<\/p>\n Lighthouse Beach<\/strong> sits below the Chatham Lighthouse<\/strong> and gives you the classic view. Access to the active lighthouse itself is limited, so plan on looking rather than climbing.<\/p>\n Four choices, four different moods.<\/p>\n Often, yes, right off the fish pier. But the seal cruises and harbor trips run seasonally out of the area. Boating and fishing never stopped being the town’s spine.<\/p>\n 85 miles<\/strong> southeast, roughly an hour and a half from Boston Logan in normal conditions. That’s close enough to fly in and be on the water the same day. And it makes Chatham a workable base for Orleans, Wellfleet, and Provincetown.<\/p>\n Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge<\/strong> covers the beaches and birding ground south of town. It’s the counterweight to Main Street. Polished village on one end, sand and shorebirds on the other.<\/p>\n Late June through August is the peak, and it’s the most expensive and most crowded stretch of the year. Lodging here already runs high compared to other Cape bases. Add peak season and you’ll feel it.<\/p>\n September through early October is the better window. The weather holds mild, parking stops being a blood sport, and the crowds thin out. Late May and June work too, on the other side of the rush.<\/p>\n The Chamber runs a visitor center in South Chatham year-round. The downtown information booth is seasonal, which tells you something about how this town breathes.<\/p>\n They know the summer number is temporary. Twenty-five thousand people in August, and the harbor goes quiet again.<\/p>\n That’s the trade Chatham makes every year. You can visit during the loud half or the quiet half.
